Livelihood development

The main objective under this component is to contribute to the socio-economic development or the target villages based on the needs and aspirations of communities.

The first tool used under this component is a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) which helps to collect quickly key socio-economic data and identify problems and needs in a participatory way. Prioritization of project activities and planning are the next steps.

Because of its participatory and needs based nature, the livelihood component of RISE project is very varied. It includes rural infrastructure (mainly water and sanitation), hygiene (how to effectively use water and sanitation infrastructure), agriculture (support to inputs, promotion of sustainable techniques), access to finance (creation of village development funds – credit/saving schemes managed by the communities), education (improving access to education material such as books), marketing (linking rural products – agriculture, handicraft, etc.) to markets. Strengthening of producer groups (agriculture, handicraft, etc.) both technically and at management level is a key activity. Tourism has also been promoted in some villages close to the plain of jars site III.
